Company history

Our company name "Massons Healthcare" was established in 2003, after Orthotics Australia (established in 1995 by Anton & Kris Karak) acquired George W Masson & Sons Pty Ltd in Melbourne, Australia.

The Masson surname has been synonymous with the orthotics and prosthetics industry for over 100 years. The founder of George W Masson & Sons Pty Ltd, George William Masson, was an indentured apprentice in the early 1900′s in England, with an established company "Allen & Hanburys" in London. George developed his skills under the guidance of a Splint and Surgical Instrument Maker, commonly known today as an Orthotist/ Prosthetist. Shortly after completing his apprenticeship in 1911, George emigrated to Australia in 1912, taking up employment in Sydney with a local Splint & Surgical Instrument Manufacturing Company.

At the outbreak of World War I, George volunteered for service in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF), and was shipped to Gallipoli, Turkey. While in Gallipoli, he suffered war injuries and after rehabilitation returned to Australia where he, because of his previous training as a Splint and Surgical Instrument Maker, was asked to join the Commonwealth Limb Factory at the Caulfield Military Hospital in Melbourne.

In 1930 Lord Nuffield, gave a grant to the Melbourne Children’s Hospital, to build and establish a workshop and train disabled adolescents in the manufacture of orthopaedic and prosthetic appliances. George was invited to supervise the building and manage the workshop for this Hospital. He would take on the role and continue as workshop manager through the polio epidemic of 1937 and the war years until 1945.

Upon his return from RAAF Service in 1946, Richard Masson (George's eldest son) together with George established the company "George W. Masson & Sons Pty. Ltd.", with Trevor (George's youngest son) later joining the company in 1955. Their company established themselves in the Australian industry as manufacturers and distributors of orthopaedic and prosthetic devices, servicing private and public hospitals, the Australian Government’s Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), Repatriation Artificial Limb and Appliance Centres (RALAC), and privately owned prosthetic and orthotic facilities throughout Australia. In 1975, the driving force of the business evolved from device manufacture to the development and expansion of their product distribution. Three generations of the Masson family managed the company until the acquisition by Orthotics Australia in 2003.

Today, Massons Healthcare is an established and growing family run business under Anton and Kris Karak, providing clinical and wholesale orthotic and prosthetic (O&P) products and services.
